New Gilbert Program Will Fund Research and Scholarship on Crucial Economic Issues
LOS ANGELES, CA, (February 9, 2015 ) – The UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate has announced a partnership with The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation to establish The UCLA Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Program in Real Estate, Finance and Urban Economics. The transformative research program is the result of a $1 million gift from The Gilbert Foundation.
The Gilbert Program will produce and disseminate through its scholars and fellows high-quality, publishable research and will produce symposia, conferences and other programs in real estate and urban economics to address crucial societal concerns.
“This is a transformational gift, both to UCLA and to the community at large,” said Martin H. Blank, Jr., Director of The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation. “The Gilbert Program will greatly assist the Ziman Center in expanding its efforts to help solve pressing issues that impact us all, including housing and mortgage markets, the affordable housing crisis, environmental sustainability, urban transportation, municipal finance, the regulatory environment, capital markets and macroeconomics. The Gilberts, who were heavily involved in the acquisition, development and ownership of real estate throughout their lives, would see this commitment as a logical extension of that which provided them the resources to establish the Foundation which is the legacy of their deep charitable endeavors."

Specifically, The Gilbert Foundation grant will: 1) create The Gilbert Foundation Real Estate Research Fund to directly support the real estate, finance and urban economics research of affiliated faculty and academics; 2) establish The Gilbert Foundation Visiting Scholars and Fellows Program including the named Gilbert Senior Fellowship to fund the work of real estate scholars, graduate students, doctoral and postdoctoral candidates thereby recruiting the industry’s top scholars to UCLA and launching the next generation of renowned real estate faculty; and 3) sponsor one symposium, conference or program annually focusing on critical and abiding topics of real estate, finance and urban economics.
“UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate provides crucial economic research, and its work is cited widely by media, academics, policy planners and community stakeholders,” said Ziman Center Director Stuart Gabriel. “This gift amplifies that impact, while it prepares the next generation of leaders to address these issues as well.”
