This NY Times piece discusses the demand for 400 square foot apartments in hip parts of NYC. In housing markets where the price per sqft is high, this must mean that the quality of the area is terrific but demand curves do slope down and middle class people can only afford to live in such areas if they reduce the number of square feet they consume. This article walks the reader through the costs and benefits of living in such housing. I did not know that Mayor Bloomberg seeks for more people to live this "Tokyo" style life. Can Americans change their ways and downsize? I would guess that there is certain segment of the population who are neat enough and don't mind having their bed so close to their kitchen.

Just wanted to share a quote with your readers – A revolution can be neither made nor stopped. The only thing that can be done is for one of several of its children to give it a direction by dint of victories.

Though the facility is for the poor, but still the rich is also demanding the need to have a cheap apartment.
There are cheap alternatives in big size cities also but not big and spacey.

Interesting article, but living in a 400 sqrt apartment is insane, you might as well live in a cage.

Awesome article. you have a good point. With increase cost of living, increase in population, slowly squizzing our requirements, now we have to either compromise with it or pay high. Earlier wishing something and achieving that same goal was far easiler. Now its far distant. One can wish only

I definitely couldn't do this. I wouldn't mind trying it out for a month but not for long term living. Reminds me of those Tokyo "pod" hotels.
400sq.ft is far too confined for me. I'm looking at some awesome properties in Oakville right now through a broker I found on Google (http://www.krisztinaneglia.com)
