I especially liked his take on the Covid diagnostic testing reimbursement system and how it is encouraging a delay in providing results. His recommendation is to set the standard to be the following: "You have to have the reimbursement system pay a little bit extra for 24 hours, pay the normal fee for 48 hours, and pay nothing [if it isn’t done by then]. And they will fix it overnight." This would enable a quick testing turnaround compared to what we are seeing today.

Thank you Sharon. I agree. I further recommend a recent blog post by Alex Tabarrok over at Marginal Revolution, where he elaborates on payment systems for COVID tests, and how they can improve testing efficiency:

Thanks for sharing Professor Wacziarg. This is a great follow-up to Bill Gate's TED talk you shared with us in the Global Trends syllabus. In hindsight, everything Bill Gates mentioned in the TED talk were extremely accurate how that COVID is happening (can he see the future?).

The fact that CDC didn't act as the face of America in this crisis is disappointing, and that White House cut them off is even more so. I'm hopeful and optimistic as Bill Gates that we can fight this thing towards mid-late next year.

Bill Gates has been very consistent in pointing out the problems since the beginning of the pandemic and he's been very accurate. It's a concern that such strong and scientific voice was not heard louder in the society. It's a bigger concern that he's often been the attacking target from certain media.
Besides what's been discussed above, one of my takeaways from this interview is his view towards other nation's success vs our failure in combating the coronavirus. To have this view we have to see the entire picture from the world's perspective instead of only from America's view. (Perhaps we need better source of information on top of the traditional media outlets we have here. )
