Summer 2015 Edition of Assets Now Available for Download on Android and iOS Platforms

 

The Summer 2015 edition of Assets is now available for download on all Android and iOS platforms. The Web edition is also available, with the iPhone and iPad versions coming out later this week.

Going forward, the long-time UCLA Anderson School of Management publication will be updated on a continual basis sans the thematic issues that previously defined each release. The new version launches in October.

In the latest Assets, Bryce Edmonds takes a look at the the new services that are disrupting the TV viewing landscape in a story featuring the views of Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins ('01). In an interview with Carolyn Gray Anderson, television writer Erika Green Swafford ('99) dishes on her career and how an MBA informs her creative endeavors.

In addition, Paul Feinberg details the latest venture from classmates Bryce Luken ('14) and Elaine Shi ('14), whose company Body Spec employs medical technology to aid clients on their path to health and fitness. Feinberg also takes a deep dive into the art of career switching with a cabal of alumni who have transitioned and/or are helping others do the same.

Poets & Quants Names Anderson EMBA Derek Herrera among the Class of 2015’s Best Executive MBAs

Recent Anderson graduate and retired U.S. Marine Captain Derek Herrera (EMBA ’15) made news throughout 2014 and 2015, winning the John Wooden Global Leadership Fellowship and earning a Bronze Star for acts of bravery performed while fighting an enemy of the United States. In May he and Zach McKinney (Ph.D., biomedical engineering ’15), Beth Johnson (EMBA ’15) and Chandrashekar Hariharan (EMBA ’15) won the 34th annual Knapp Venture Competition for Herrera’s company Spinal Singularity’s innovative, minimally invasive urinary catheter for people with spinal cord injury or disease.

Now Poets & Quants has named Herrera among the Best Executive MBAs in the Class of 2015. He is recognized for his great resourcefulness and leadership in founding a new LLC while earning his degree. Herrera, in turn gives credit to his Anderson peers, professors and mentors for influencing him with their own talent.

“No matter what your title is or what industry you work in, you will be required to work in a team or interact with consumers and clients in a professional manner,” Herrera told Poets & Quants. “At the end of the day, individual skills are only a portion of what is required to be successful in business. Personal relationships and teamwork play a very important role in any company and I am very happy that the MBA program forces every student to grow in this area.”

Journalists from across the nation gathered last night at Capitale in New York City for the 2015 Gerald Loeb Awards banquet. The Loeb Awards are among the highest honors in journalism, recognizing the work of journalists whose contributions illuminate the world of business, finance and the economy for readers and viewers around the world.

Judy D. Olian, dean of UCLA Anderson School of Management and chairman of the G. and R. Loeb Foundation, welcomed Loeb Awards honorees and their guests. CNBC's Mandy Drury, co-anchor of CNBC's Power Lunch, served as master of ceremonies.

The Gerald Loeb Awards bestow two special honors for career contributions: the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to James Grant, founder and editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer; and the Lawrence Minard Editor Award, which went to Rebecca Blumenstein, deputy editor-in-chief of The Wall Street Journal.

In addition, winners of 11 competition categories were named at the banquet:

Insider Hank Gilman Shares the Cardinal Rules of Talking to the Media

The Loeb Awards’ new “Media ‘Insiders’ Series” kicked off today with guest Hank Gilman, contributing editor for Money Magazine and former enterprise editor at Reuters, and Loeb's 2011 Minard Editor Award honoree. This installment offered an insider’s perspective into how the media operates, potential legal issues, developing relationships — matters that aren’t necessarily transparent to those operating a business, but matters that certainly arise more often than expected.

Addressing an audience of Anderson students and faculty, Gilman shared insights from his 20+ years of management overseeing editorial development and operations at major media organization. With access to instant content via social media, the news industry has changed, yet Gilman admitted that how media operates has remained the same in many ways.
