What do you do with 55 high school students from various cities, states and countries, who are curious and committed to knowing more about sustainability science and management? Enroll them in the Global Green Business Summer Institute for Young Leaders at UCLA Anderson. The weeklong program, part of Global Green Business Week, was founded five years ago by Professor Robert Spich, faculty director of the UCLA Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), in close cooperation with the UCLA Institute for Environment and Sustainability.
Students in the Summer Institute learn the fundamentals and current trends of sustainability science and management from the triple bottom line of people, profit and planet. Each facet of the program is designed to challenge them to use innovative and critical reasoning to think about business in the 21st century, and to encourage them to think creatively about the complex and dynamic issues that face a changing world and business.
The staff of UCLA professors, researchers, doctoral students, MBA students and practicing executives give insights into the environmental drivers, political economics and societal implications of policies and practices that drive and define the opportunities for the greening of business. Apart from lectures, students engage in active discussions with experts, analyze case studies and films, and take field trips to businesses and agencies that have established sustainability practices. A unique element to this program is active engagement in a team-based research project that reports its findings on the last day in a competitive round of presentations.
