Seiichiro Uchiyama, co-funder of vuPad online 3-D augmented-reality software company, says the Knapp Venture Competition means exposure for his company on several levels. “If our classmates — who will start working on various companies — know about us, they might get the idea to use our service or technology,” he says. “Also, it should give us an advantage in raising money in the future.”
According to the company, vuPad enables online furniture shoppers to visualize 3-D furniture models scaled-to-size in their own space on their mobile devices. This allows shoppers to more easily and accurately purchase furniture in the comfort of their own home. The company’s target customer, online furniture retailers, will increase sales with better customer engagement and will reduce the cost of return because customers now can test its products before purchasing, the team hopes.
Uchiyama says the team has mostly worked on their concept outside of Anderson coursework, but the Price Center has played a key role nonetheless. “They covered the cost for attending the Rice Business Plan Competition,” he says. “That competition, and now the Knapp program, have been really beneficial for us to brush up our business model and also to network.”
