In the latest installment of the Leaders On Leadership podcast series Dean Judy Olian and Professor Peter Guber are joined by Paul Irving, senior managing director and COO of the Milken Institute. The trio discuss the challenges facing leaders of non-profit organizations and why his career path has recently taken a sharp turn toward social responsibility.
About four minutes in, Guber asks Irving how one creates best practices in the non-profit sector that work for an organization in Georgia as well as a group in Seattle. Says Irving:
"You just asked the $64,000 question. Because one of the criticisms of this sector is unlike in the for-profit sector where we compete and look to win, if we have a dozen organizations that have similar missions, why aren't they sharing information?, why aren't they sharing best practices?, why aren't they complementing each other in programs? why aren't they allocating financial resources in such a way to maximize the likelihood of outcomes? ... It's a fantastic question and if you could answer that question not only would we have a much smaller social sector, we'd have a much more effective social sector."
