We received an inspiring email from UCLA Anderson Dean Judy Olian earlier in the week informing us that the 2011 John Wooden Global Leadership Award recipients are Russell Altenburg, a full-time (MBA) student in the class of 2012 and fully-employed MBA (MBA) Valerie Sun of its class of 2013. The awards will be acknowledged at this year's John Wooden Global Leadership Award Dinner on May 23, 2011.
According to the email, the pair were selected by a committee of faculty and staff from the MBA, FEMBA and EMBA programs, from a very competitive field of applicants, based on academic merit, financial need, and their record of leadership contributions. Each brings deep and varied leadership experiences to the UCLA Anderson community, and their leadership values echo those of Coach John Wooden.
On Russ:
Russ Altenburg is the former Chief Operating Officer of Students Helping Honduras (SHH), a nonprofit focused on building a movement of young leaders to empower vulnerable children in Honduras. Under his leadership, SHH was featured in the 2009 "CNN Heroes" Campaign for its innovative on-the-ground impact. In 2006, he co-founded Global Playground, an organization focused on education in developing countries that has grown to help over 3,200 children by building schools in Uganda, Cambodia, Thailand and Honduras. He previously worked at JPMorgan Sales & Trading in New York as an Associate, advising Fortune 100 clients on foreign exchange risk management. At UCLA Anderson, Russ serves as a section president, and is President of Net Impact.
On Valerie:
Valerie Sun is a member of the senior management team at Copier Headquarters, a Platinum Authorized Xerox Agency for Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties. Tasked with facilitating and improving internal and external processes with employees and customers, she is focused on leading through transparent communication, integrity, and customer service. As a child, Valerie faced a life threatening illness called aplastic anemia, and she received a bone marrow transplant at the age of 17. Due to her experience, Valerie’s personal mission in life has been to serve as a leader of patient advocacy and support, marrow donor recruitment, and healthcare education. Working extensively with organizations like the National Marrow Donor Program, Teen Impact at Children’s’ Hospital Los Angeles, and SAMFund for young adult survivors of cancer, Valerie is dedicated to supporting survivors of cancer and blood diseases. Valerie also serves as the alumnae director for her undergraduate a cappella group, the USC Sirens. She is currently a member of the Anderson a cappella group, Desperate Measures.
