A better solution to prison overcrowding at both the federal, state and local levels would be to change the policies that treat drugs as a criminal rather than health issue. The land of the free has 5% of the world's population but 25% of the world's prisoners. It is time to stop pandering to fear mongering politicians and the prison industrial complex. It is time to focus on harm reduction rather than brute force. It is time to end The War on Drugs.
