A new book about UCLA's first 100 years has just been published. I hope that its readers will see what great things UCLA has achieved in its first 100 years. For UCLA to exceed its past performance will require a new funding model. Sacramento is a great place but it has not proved itself to be a trusted partner in supporting educational excellence. You do not have to be an economist to foresee that both Federal funding and state funding for higher education will continue to decline over time. The combination of budget deficits and the nation's aging demographics, military challenges and health care obligations are such that public investment in higher education will continue to shrink.

"Military challenges" , like the war on drugs, know few economic limits when supported by fear mongering politicians. We as voters fall for it every time and less money for higher education is one of many tragic consequences.
