Arun Sarin, past CEO of Vodafone and currently on the board of Safeway, Inc. and Charles Schwab, gave a keynote presentation that was organized by the Easton Technology Leadership Program at the Anderson school on May 22nd, 2014.
Terry Kramer who worked for Vodafone as Regional President for the Americas and is currently Teaching 'Mobile Technologies,' opened the keynote speech. He felt that Arun Sarin gave him a “'view into the future' for promising sources of innovation and where value will be driven. [Sarin’s] ideas were great from many angles – from that of an executive, entrepreneur, and investor---and also for soon to be graduating MBA's thinking about how to align their careers with areas of future growth and value."
'Mobile Technologies' is among the series of courses under the 'Emerging Technologies and Markets' listing at UCLA Anderson that are offered by the Easton Technology Leadership Program. Easton's Faculty Director Charles Corbett stated "It was very impressive how he was able to cover so much ground in a single talk, reviewing the history of the mobile industry, offering predictions about how the industry will develop in future, and sharing his thoughts on leadership.”
With a written demonstration, Sarin showed the 250 attendees where he believes growth will come in the mobile sector.
Today for the average mobile device, he estimated the hardware cost to the consumer to be $200; the software cost to be $50; cost of apps and content to be $50 and connectivity to be $700 with the cost of ownership at $1000.
Sarin believes hardware, content, apps, and broadband/connectivity will all fluctuate greatly in the coming years with costs changing as follows: hardware (-$100), software (+$25), apps and content (+$50) and broadband (-$200) making software and, apps and content the two growth areas in this sector.
No landline, No banks, No problem!
Sarin’s closed with the following takeaways:
- Increasing using of mobile devices, multiple platforms and technological developments such as cloud computing and streaming will bring about Convergence.
- Consumers will move increasingly towards Digital Payments.
- Businesses will offer Personalized Coupons.
- The sensors revolution is going to come and going to be very big.
When asked what advise he had as a young IITian, young MBA and young CEO, for Anderson students, he said the fundamental key to finding success in life starts with "finding a good life partner to share it with.”
