UCLA Anderson’s Applied Management Research program announced the Class of 2016 winners of the Deloitte Consulting Award for Management Consulting Achievement and the Sedgwick Award for best AMR or Business Creation Option written report.
Recipient of a $5,000 award, the winner of the 2016 Deloitte Consulting Award is Team 9 – Kopernik, consisting of Dan Abbott, Akinori Matsuda, Lucy Prom, Britney Sussman and Richard Wang (Paul Park, advisor). A panel of Deloitte consultants judged the winner based on the five finalist teams’ presentations at the Deloitte offices in Los Angeles on May 6, 2016. The team’s client was Bali-based nonprofit Kopernik, who partnered with Olivier Pouillon of Bali Recycling to develop an effective solution to Bali’s waste problem that would feature a trailer to safely transport trash behind a motorbike and a smartphone app to connect waste collectors with waste generators. The AMR project evolved into a complete startup strategy to launch a comprehensive trailer-app-education solution, supplemented by well-researched proposals for financial modeling, investor pitches and recommendations on where and how to launch a social enterprise that will run the solution.
The Sedgwick Award, a $4,000 prize, was decided by a committee of faculty and AMR staff and went to Team 23 – Tenet Healthcare, which included Chase Gharrity, Chris Hunsaker, James Huntington, Ben Myers and Daniel Yokomizo (George Ingersoll, advisor). Client Tenet Healthcare asked the Anderson team to formalize its value proposition to current and future employees in terms of career progression, geographic mobility opportunities across the U.S., and distinctive benefits. The team created a strategy for Tenet to implement an employer branding strategy to attract and retain nursing talent in the mid-term over the next five to 10 years.
Finalists for the Deloitte Award included these additional teams:
Amazon Studios: Mark Hickner, Michael Leve, Megan McCoy, Brendan O’Kane, Hoyland Ricks (Derek Alderton, advisor)*
Farmer Brothers: Daniela Castillo Contreras, Mei Goh, Jane Rah, Ryan Schmit, Scott Sugimoto (Steve Werber, advisor)
Houlihan Lokey: Kimberly Barger, Noelle Campbell, Fernanda De Souza Agostini Alves, Marius Hauser, Bryan Whitmer (Bill Seeger, advisor)
Since 1992, the Deloitte Consulting Award has been given to the AMR team and project judged to represent the highest standards of leadership, teamwork, research and analysis, professionalism, and strategic creativity in its solution of a complex problem.
The Edward V. Sedgwick III Memorial Award recognizes the AMR team that produced a written report of exceptional quality, clarity and persuasive analysis.
Please join us in congratulating Anderson’s Class of 2016 winning teams and all the nominees. Winners will be honored at the academic awards banquet and their names engraved on the Deloitte and Sedgwick awards plaques in the D Atrium.
